Working for Justice

Striving to fulfill St. Paul’s vision, the Working for Justice (WFJ) ministry endeavors to inform, educate and mobilize members of our congregation and neighboring communities in matters relating to justice.  Our ministry has addressed justice issues relating to social, economic, environmental and political matters, as referenced in the UMC Book of Discipline and Book of Social Principles.  WFJ has engaged the congregation and community with: regular small group meetings, book studies, prayer vigils, participation in public marches, COVID response actions, and by inviting others who are working for just to partner with us.

The Clean Air Group Of +10 is a subgroup of WFJ, and focuses on environmental justice.  CAGO+10 is working to help townships update ordinances to protect citizens from risks associated with fracking and other sources of pollution.  The group is also supporting continuous air monitoring initiatives around the Shell petrochemical facility, which being constructed in Beaver County.

The COVID response team is a standing group ready to respond to community needs brought about by the pandemic, including serving as a trusted source of information to help protect people from COVID-19 related risks, facilitating neighbor-to neighbor assistance, providing a community safety net and connection to other safety net organizations, and organizing activities that inspire hope, courage, and persistence as our community works together to weather the pandemic intact.  This includes organizing “victory gardens” and planning a community garden for personal and communal benefit.

We invite people of every age, race, ethnicity, economic reality, family status, sexual orientation, gender identity, diverse ability, or legal status to join us, knowing “what doth the LORD requires of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8).  We really mean all people.

Working for Justice meets the second Thursday of each month; Clean Air Group meets the third Thursday, and COVID Response meets on Wednesdays.  During the pandemic, we meet virtually.
