Tai
Chi is a slow motion, low impact exercise that stresses relaxation and
concentration.
The smooth graceful movements are gentle on the joints.
Tai Chi is excellent for improving balance and reducing the risk of
falls.
It has been known to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis through its
slow and gentle movements.
Some of the other benefits of Tai Chi are reduction of blood pressure,
lowering of cholesterol, and improvement of overall body flexibility.
The use of arms in the Tai Chi movements increases upper body strength
and the deep breathing exercises aid in reducing stress.
David J. Slaughter began training in Chinese Martial Arts in 1981 under Master Ernest Rothrock in Scranton, PA. He relocated to Pittsburgh to become the Head Instructor of the North Hills branch of Rothrock's Kung Fu and Tai Chi Studio from 1995 to 2006.
Today,
Sifu Slaughter owns and operates Sifu Slaughter's Chinese Martial Arts,

Why
try Yoga?
Yoga
can help you gain energy for better focus, concentration, strength, flexibility
and optimal health by undoing the unhealthy habits of unconscious action.
The awareness gained through the practice of Yoga is without limit and
can empower you to begin to improve such things as posture, eating habits,
work habits, interaction with others, organizational habits, etc.
Class
goals and suggestions for your hatha yoga practice
This
is your opportunity to practice relaxed awareness of body, breath and mind. The class will include sequences such as the sun salutation
and/or parts of it for less experienced students; various standing, twisting, forward bending and backward
extension, and inversions designed for the students to assist both posture
steadiness and comfort and to reduce pain and instability, and increase breath
awareness. Some temporary muscle
soreness may occur depending on how much structural change is made.
The students are asked to honor their own limitations. Special emphasis
will be put on both the structure of the asanas, as well as the awareness of
relaxation of effort so breathing is not interrupted and the student learns to
lessen the natural tendency for restlessness and instability.
The asanas should feel firm and steady and somewhat comfortable
while demanding total focus. At all times there should be a relaxed awareness
of breath.
The instructor, Marguerite Lang,
has been a student of Yoga for over 10 years and a trained teacher for 4
years. She was certified with the Himalayan Institute in 2008 and she also
belongs to Yoga Alliance and International Association for Yoga Therapy.
Maggi’s background and education is in Physical Therapy.
A fascination with anatomy and movement has added to the enthusiasm for
the practice. Maggi owns a
wellness center in Allison Park that focuses on massage, yoga and meditation
classes. She believes yoga postures, connecting with the breath and
mindfulness in movement will help one get to know their body and all its
possibilities.
Equipment
needed
A
Yoga mat is necessary. Props such as blocks, straps and wool or cotton
blankets are helpful. Clothing
should allow for movement in all directions – and usually some type of
stretchy knit or sweatpants and shirt work the best.
Fee: The fee is $6 per class or you may pay the discounted fee of $40 for all 10 sessions.
